Coat of arms of the city of Bordeaux: gules, a silver Grosse-Cloche ensigned by three golden leopards. The arms are now emblazoned gules, an open Grosse-Cloche, pierced and masoned sable and ensigned by a golden leopard; an azure sea, wavy sable and argent, charged with a crescent of the same; an azure chief semed with fleurs-de-lis. The coat of arms of Bordeaux evokes the history of the city, from Henry II to the present day.
 
Symbolism of the coat of arms: the fortress represents in a stylized form the city walls and the Grosse-Cloche, surrounded by two towers that no longer exist. The Grosse-Cloche was part of the town hall in the Middle Ages and under the Ancien Régime. The leopard is the symbol of the kings of England. During English rule, the coat of arms of Bordeaux featured three leopards. The crescent represents the Port de la Lune. The azure sea rippled with sable and argent symbolizes the sea and the Garonne, which brought wealth to the city. The azure chief strewn with fleurs-de-lis is the symbol of the Kingdom of France and the cities loyal to the Crown. It was added when the city returned to the control of the Kings of France.
 
Motto of the city of Bordeaux: Lilia sola regunt lunam unda castra leonem "the lilies reign alone over the moon, the waves, the fortress, and the lion," clearly alludes to the domination of the King of France over Bordeaux after the period of English occupation.
 
Emblem, badge, or cipher of Bordeaux: three intertwined crescents. This emblem of the city of Bordeaux, which appeared in the mid-17th century, comes from the crescent representing the port, combined with two other crescents representing the two continents with which the city traded. The emblem can be called "Bordeaux badge", more accurately "Bordeaux cipher", but in no case "small arms" (as one can improperly find from time to time).
